Microsoft has released the optional September preview update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. KB5124010 brings version 24H2 to build 26100.9550 and version 25H2 to build 26200.9550.
The update fixes a File History problem that could stop backups from being created or restored on an external drive or network location. It also improves Bluetooth reliability, File Explorer previews, desktop personalization, accessibility, and Windows Backup.
File History fix
Microsoft says KB5124010 fixes an issue where File History could fail to back up or restore files. Affected systems might show a false “Reconnect your drive” message even when a compatible backup drive was connected and working.
If you rely on File History, check that it works after installing the update and confirm that a new backup completes. PCWorld and BetaNews also covered the problem after it appeared with the September security update.
Bluetooth and File Explorer changes
KB5124010 improves Bluetooth connection status reporting and the stability of the Bluetooth and devices page in Settings. It also fixes a problem where Windows could show the Bluetooth radio as enabled after it had been turned off. Microsoft lists additional improvements for Bluetooth Classic microphone compatibility, Bluetooth audio streaming, LE Audio, and shared audio.
File Explorer now shows a “Preview anyway” button for HTML files downloaded from the web. Other supported files, including PDFs, can be previewed automatically. File Explorer Home also remembers whether sections were expanded or collapsed, while cloud thumbnail previews and the Details pane have been improved.

- Windows 11 adds Emoji 17.0 support through the emoji panel opened with Windows key + Period.
- Microsoft adds a Tips widget for the Widgets board and lock screen.
- A new setting can open apps maximized automatically.
- Users can remap the Copilot key to Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key.
- Personalization updates add DIB image support for desktop backgrounds and improve slideshow behavior across multiple desktops.
- The PC-to-PC Migration tool has been removed. Microsoft directs users to Windows Backup when moving files and settings to a new PC.
Should you install KB5124010?
KB5124010 is an optional, non-security preview update. Users who need the File History repair can install it now. Others can wait for the changes to arrive with the October 13, 2026 Patch Tuesday release, according to PCWorld.
Microsoft identifies KB5124010 as the final non-security preview update for Windows 11 24H2. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will stop receiving updates on October 13, 2026.
To install KB5124010, open Settings, go to Windows Update, select Advanced options, open Optional updates, and look for “2026-09 Preview Update (KB5124010)”. Restart the PC when Windows asks. Since this is a preview update, test it on one system before installing it across several PCs.
