Google has released its September 2026 Android Drop with five new features covering Gemini, Find Hub, accessibility and Google Messages.
One of the more useful additions lets Gemini remember where you stored everyday items such as keys or a passport. Android 17 also gets Motion Assist, which is designed to reduce motion sickness while using a phone in a moving vehicle.
The update also introduces Guided Vision in Gemini Live, shared Google Keep notes inside Messages and new chat themes.
These features do not all require the latest version of Android. Some will work on devices running much older Android versions, while others have specific requirements.
What is included in the September 2026 Android Drop?
The five additions announced by Google are:
- Gemini can save the location of items in Find Hub.
- Motion Assist adds a moving bubble overlay for passengers using their phones.
- Guided Vision uses Gemini Live to describe what the phone camera sees.
- Google Keep notes can be created and edited from Google Messages.
- Google Messages gets custom backgrounds and chat colors.
Some are available now, while Gemini’s remembered items feature and Guided Vision are coming soon.
Gemini can remember where you kept an item
Find Hub can already help locate devices and belongings that have compatible tracking hardware. Google’s new feature covers a different type of problem: remembering where you personally put something.
You can tell Gemini where you stored an item and ask it to save the information in Find Hub.
For example, you might keep your passport in a particular drawer before a long period when you do not expect to use it. You can tell Gemini to remember that location and optionally attach a photo.
When you need the passport later, you can ask Gemini where it was stored or check the remembered items section in Find Hub.
The item itself does not need a tracker. Gemini is saving the location information that you provide rather than detecting the physical location of the object.
That makes the feature suitable for things that would not normally have a Bluetooth tracker attached, including spare keys, documents and other belongings kept in storage.
Google says remembered items will be available on Android 16 and newer devices in countries where Gemini and Find Hub are supported. The feature is listed as coming soon.
Motion Assist targets motion sickness on Android 17
Using a phone while travelling in a car can cause nausea or discomfort for some passengers. This can happen because the movement sensed by the body does not match what the eyes see while looking at a mostly stationary screen.
Motion Assist is Google’s attempt to reduce that problem.
When the feature is active, Android displays a subtle set of bubbles over the screen. The bubbles move in response to the motion of the vehicle, giving the user a visual reference for the movement happening around them.
The phone can activate Motion Assist automatically, and users can also place it in Quick Settings for easier access.
Google provides controls for the shape, color and opacity of the bubbles, so the overlay does not have to look the same for everyone.
Motion Assist requires a phone running Android 17.
Guided Vision lets Gemini describe what the camera sees
Guided Vision is aimed primarily at blind and low-vision users.
The feature works with Gemini Live and the phone’s camera. A user can point the camera at something and receive spoken information about what is visible.
It could be used to read fine print on food packaging, identify household objects or help read a menu in a place where the lighting makes the text difficult to see.
Gemini can also provide instructions when the camera is not positioned correctly. It may ask the user to move the phone, pan across an area or center an object to give it a clearer view.
Guided Vision can be added to Android’s Accessibility shortcuts. Google says it can also be enabled through the TalkBack menu or Gemini app settings.
Unlike Motion Assist, this feature is not limited to a recent Android release. Google plans to make Guided Vision available on phones running Android 9 and newer in countries where Gemini is supported. It is coming soon.
Google also gives Guided Vision a clear safety warning. The feature can make mistakes and should not be used for navigation or obstacle detection. Google says it is not a medical device, mobility aid or replacement for safe-travel guidance.
Google Keep is coming directly into Google Messages
Shared notes are also becoming part of Google Messages.
The new integration lets people bring Google Keep into a conversation by tapping the + icon in Messages.
A group could use it for a grocery list, vacation plan or another note that several people need to update. Participants can view the note, add information and make changes from the conversation instead of repeatedly switching between Messages and Keep.
This can also keep useful information from getting buried inside a long message thread.
Google started rolling out the Keep integration in Google Messages on September 1, 2026.
Google Messages gets custom chat backgrounds
Google is adding more personalization to individual Messages conversations as well.
Chat themes allow users to give different conversations their own backgrounds and colors.
You can select a wallpaper or use one of your own photos. Google Messages can match the text bubble colors to the selected background, and those colors can also be changed manually.
A travel group, family conversation and another chat can therefore have different backgrounds instead of every conversation using the same appearance.
Google says Chat theme is available now in Google Messages.
Which Android versions support the new features?
The September Android Drop is worth separating from Android 17 itself because the five features have different requirements.
Motion Assist: Android 17.
Gemini remembered items in Find Hub: Android 16 or newer, with Gemini and Find Hub support required in the user’s country.
Guided Vision: Android 9 or newer in countries where Gemini is available.
The Google Keep integration and Chat themes are being delivered through Google Messages. Google has not described them as Android 17-only features in its announcement.
This means someone who does not have Android 17 may still receive parts of the September Drop.
Android Drops are putting more features outside major OS upgrades
The September release is another example of Google delivering Android features through individual apps and services instead of tying everything to one major operating system update.
Gemini, Find Hub and Google Messages account for four of the five additions announced this month. Only Motion Assist specifically requires Android 17.
For users, the practical detail is device compatibility. Checking the Android version alone will not tell you whether every September feature is available. Gemini availability, Find Hub support, Google Messages updates and Google’s gradual rollout can also determine what appears on a particular phone.
Google began announcing and rolling out these September Android features on September 1, 2026, with Remembered Items and Guided Vision scheduled to follow soon.
