OpenAI is preparing to end its direct model agreement with Cursor after the AI coding company was acquired by SpaceX.
The company has informed SpaceX that it plans to wind down the contract that lets Cursor offer OpenAI models directly to users. OpenAI has proposed November 12, 2026 as the shutdown date and says it is giving the maximum notice allowed under the agreement.
The move affects one of the most popular AI coding tools and comes after almost four years of cooperation between OpenAI and Cursor.
OpenAI says its concern is tied to Cursor’s new ownership. The company says past contract issues involving Elon Musk-controlled companies have made it unwilling to continue the same agreement under SpaceX.
Future OpenAI models, including Astra, will also not be supplied to Cursor through the existing contract.
What OpenAI has decided
Cursor currently gives users access to several AI models inside its coding environment, including models from OpenAI.
That access is partly covered by a custom commercial agreement between OpenAI and Cursor.
After SpaceX acquired Cursor, OpenAI gained the right to review that agreement because the contract contains a change-of-control clause.
OpenAI has now chosen to use that clause.
The company says November 12 is the latest proposed date allowed under the contract. Existing OpenAI models are expected to remain available during the transition, although the final shutdown date still needs to be formally confirmed.
There is another restriction that starts earlier.
OpenAI says future models will no longer be added to Cursor under the current agreement. That includes Astra, an upcoming OpenAI model that the company has linked to stronger cybersecurity capabilities.
Cursor’s relationship with OpenAI goes back years
Cursor was developed by Anysphere, a company founded in 2022 by Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark and Aman Sanger.
OpenAI became involved early.
In 2023, the OpenAI Startup Fund led an $8 million seed investment in Anysphere. Cursor later grew into one of the most widely used AI coding products.
By early 2025, Anysphere said Cursor had millions of users and had crossed $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
OpenAI also reportedly explored the possibility of acquiring Anysphere before the company later became part of SpaceX.
That history makes the current decision more notable. OpenAI is ending a commercial relationship with a company it helped support during its early growth.
SpaceX changed the ownership structure
The situation changed in 2026.
In April, SpaceX announced a partnership with Cursor and received an option to acquire the company for around $60 billion.
SpaceX later moved ahead with the acquisition.
The deal was completed in August 2026, bringing Cursor under SpaceX ownership.
Cursor said the deal would give it access to much larger computing resources, including a large GPU fleet that could be used to train its own AI models.
The acquisition also triggered the change-of-control clause in OpenAI’s contract.
That clause is the direct contractual reason OpenAI can now end the agreement.
There is no public claim from OpenAI that Cursor itself broke the contract before the acquisition.
Why OpenAI is concerned about SpaceX
OpenAI’s announcement points to its previous experience with other Elon Musk-controlled companies.
The company refers to earlier issues involving Twitter, now X, and xAI.
According to OpenAI, Twitter broke the terms of a previous contract after Musk acquired the company.
OpenAI also points to testimony given by Musk earlier this year involving xAI.
During court proceedings, Musk was asked whether xAI had used OpenAI models while training its own systems through model distillation.
He answered that it had happened “partly.”
Model distillation is a method where the outputs or behaviour of one AI model are used to help train another model.
OpenAI says using its technology this way violated its terms of service.
That history now matters more because xAI is also part of SpaceX.
Cursor, xAI and SpaceX therefore sit under the same wider corporate structure.
OpenAI says it cannot be confident that SpaceX will use future OpenAI technology within its rules.
The Elon Musk and OpenAI dispute is part of the background
Elon Musk was one of OpenAI’s original co-founders when the organisation was created in 2015.
He left OpenAI’s board in 2018.
Their relationship later deteriorated.
Musk became a public critic of OpenAI and went on to create xAI, which competes directly with OpenAI.
He also sued OpenAI, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman over the company’s direction and its move away from the structure under which it was originally founded.
That dispute later reached federal court.
The legal and commercial conflict between the two sides has continued while xAI, OpenAI and other companies compete to build increasingly capable AI systems.
The Cursor decision sits inside that wider history.
Astra adds a safety issue
OpenAI’s announcement gives special attention to Astra.
The company says Astra may have stronger cybersecurity capabilities than earlier models.
OpenAI has said internal testing could not rule out Astra reaching what it calls the “Critical” level under its Preparedness Framework.
At that level, an AI model could be capable of advanced cybersecurity work with less human assistance.
That may include finding unknown software vulnerabilities, helping develop exploits or carrying out more complex cyber operations.
OpenAI says models with these capabilities need stricter controls around access, monitoring and deployment.
This helps explain why the company is treating the Cursor contract differently now.
Future AI models may carry higher security risks than the models that were available when OpenAI and Cursor first started working together.
For OpenAI, the agreement is now about more than giving a coding app access to another language model. The company wants stronger control over where its most capable systems are used and who is responsible for that use.
OpenAI is still praising Cursor
OpenAI’s statement is careful about Cursor itself.
The company says it has “enormous respect” for the Cursor team, its product and what it has built for developers.
OpenAI also acknowledges that developers will be the people most affected by the decision.
That matters because Cursor has become part of the daily workflow for many software developers.
Users rely on it for writing code, understanding large codebases, fixing bugs, creating new features and automating repetitive development work.
Removing direct access to OpenAI models could change those workflows for people who have built their setup around a particular OpenAI model.
OpenAI models may still work inside Cursor
The end of the commercial agreement does not necessarily mean OpenAI models will disappear completely from the Cursor editor.
There are other ways developers may be able to use them.
One option is to connect a personal OpenAI API key to Cursor, depending on the feature being used.
That would mean the developer pays OpenAI directly instead of receiving model access through Cursor’s agreement.
Developers may also be able to use OpenAI’s Codex tools inside compatible development environments.
Third-party cloud services that provide access to OpenAI models could remain another option.
The main change is that Cursor will no longer receive the same direct model supply from OpenAI under its existing custom contract.
For users who only choose a model from Cursor’s built-in list and do not manage their own API access, that difference could become more noticeable after the agreement ends.
What happens before November 12
Existing OpenAI models are expected to remain available during the notice period.
OpenAI says it chose the latest date allowed under the contract to give developers more time to adjust.
The proposed cutoff is November 12, 2026.
That date could still change if both sides agree to a different arrangement or if Cursor ends support earlier.
Users should also expect a gap between existing and future models.
Even if a current OpenAI model stays available until November, a new OpenAI model released before then may not appear inside Cursor.
That could make the transition visible well before the final cutoff date.
Cursor has other model providers
Cursor is already a multi-model coding platform.
Its users can choose between models from different AI companies depending on availability and subscription level.
That reduces the immediate impact of losing direct access to OpenAI.
Anthropic’s Claude models are widely used for coding and are already available in Cursor.
Google’s Gemini models are another option.
Cursor also has its own models and has started building a closer connection with the wider SpaceX and xAI ecosystem.
The company is therefore unlikely to depend on one AI provider in the long term.
SpaceX could push Cursor toward Grok and its own models
The acquisition gives Cursor access to resources that were difficult to obtain as an independent startup.
Training large AI models requires expensive computing infrastructure and large numbers of GPUs.
SpaceX and its related companies have access to far more computing power.
Cursor has already said that this could help it build stronger and cheaper models.
That creates a possible path where Cursor relies more heavily on its own technology and models connected to xAI.
Grok could also become more important inside the product.
This direction has not been confirmed as a complete replacement strategy, but it fits the way Cursor has described the benefits of joining SpaceX.
If Cursor develops strong coding models of its own, losing direct access to OpenAI may become less important over time.
Anthropic and Google could gain more Cursor usage
OpenAI’s exit also creates more room for other model providers.
Claude is already one of the main alternatives for coding tasks.
If Cursor users can no longer select the latest OpenAI models directly, some may switch to Claude instead.
Gemini could gain users for the same reason.
This could make Cursor an important battleground between model providers even after OpenAI’s contract ends.
The quality, price and coding performance of each model will matter more to users than which company originally supplied Cursor with AI technology.
AI coding tools are also facing more security pressure
The timing of OpenAI’s decision comes as security concerns around AI coding agents are growing.
A recent report said Russian-speaking cybercriminals had used Cursor while attacking several companies.
The model involved in that case was Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5, according to the report.
There is no evidence that this incident caused OpenAI to cancel its Cursor agreement.
It does show the type of problem AI companies are preparing for.
Modern coding agents can do more than suggest a few lines of code.
They can read large projects, run commands, interact with tools and perform longer tasks with limited human input.
Those capabilities are useful for developers. They can also be misused.
As coding agents become more capable, companies that build the underlying models are likely to place tighter conditions on how partners distribute them.
What Cursor users should watch now
The first date to keep in mind is November 12, 2026.
That is the proposed end date for Cursor’s direct OpenAI agreement.
Developers who rely heavily on OpenAI models should also watch for changes in Cursor’s model list before then.
New OpenAI models may already be missing.
Users who want to keep using OpenAI models after the cutoff may need to consider their own API access, Codex or another supported service.
Cursor users who are comfortable with Claude, Gemini, Grok or Cursor’s own models may see less disruption.
The practical impact will depend on which model each developer uses today and how much of their workflow depends on Cursor’s built-in OpenAI access.
What happens next
Cursor now has a strong reason to reduce its dependence on OpenAI.
SpaceX ownership gives it access to capital, computing resources and xAI technology that could support that move.
OpenAI, meanwhile, is becoming more selective about how future models are distributed as their capabilities increase.
The two companies could still reach a different agreement before November, but OpenAI’s public statement makes its current position clear.
For developers, the bigger change may happen over the next few model releases.
Cursor could become more focused on its own models and Grok. OpenAI could push more developers toward Codex and direct API access. Anthropic and Google could gain more usage inside coding tools that previously depended heavily on OpenAI.
