Anthropic is combining Claude’s regular chat experience with Claude Cowork, its tool for longer-running tasks, into one interface. The company announced the change on September 16, along with Claude Docs and Claude Slides.
The update changes how users start work. Instead of deciding whether a task belongs in chat, Cowork, or Design, users can begin in one conversation and let Claude choose the capabilities it needs. Anthropic says Cowork and chat will share the same context, skills, connectors, projects, and artifacts.
One Claude for quick questions and longer jobs
Claude can still answer a short question in the usual chat view. For a larger job, users can hand over a report, research task, or presentation and allow Claude to continue working after they close their laptop. The same conversation can carry the work from an initial request to a finished document or slide deck.
Anthropic’s example is a weekly business report. A user can ask Claude to review pipeline changes, flag anything that slipped, and turn the findings into presentation slides. The report and slides remain linked to the same conversation, so edits and comments can be handled without starting again in another tool.
Users can check progress from a phone, share the finished work through one link, and schedule recurring tasks such as a Monday report. Claude asks for approval before taking an action by default. A setting lets users reduce those check-ins, while the user keeps control of the final decision.
Docs and Slides arrive in beta
Claude Docs and Claude Slides are available in beta on paid plans. Docs lets users create and edit a document with Claude in the conversation. Slides lets users draft a presentation, edit it, present it from Claude, or download it as a PowerPoint or PDF file.
Claude Design, Anthropic’s visual creation tool, also works inside regular conversations. The company says users can create designs, prototypes, and other visual work without opening a separate workspace.
What changes for Claude users
The practical change is a shift from choosing a product mode to describing the job. That should reduce the setup friction around agentic work, especially when a task moves between research, writing, files, and presentation output.
There is a tradeoff. A single entry point gives Claude more responsibility for deciding which tools to use. Anthropic’s approval setting helps keep that decision visible, but people working with sensitive files or connected services should review permissions and outputs before allowing longer tasks to run unattended.
The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers on the web, desktop, and mobile apps over the coming weeks. Team and Free plans will follow. Enterprise administrators will receive notice before the change reaches their organizations and can decide when to enable the new capabilities.
