Before you touch the screen at all, confirm what you’re actually looking at. A lot of “bright pixels” turn out to be dust under a screen protector, a rendering glitch in one app, or even a hot pixel in a photo you’re viewing — none of which need any fixing on your end.
Confirm It’s a Real Bright Pixel First
- Take a screenshot of the spot and open that screenshot on a different device (your phone, a laptop). If the dot isn’t there in the screenshot, it’s not a display defect — it’s something in the image or app itself.
- Turn off the iPad, wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth, and check from an angle with the light off. Dust or a smudge under a screen protector can look identical to a stuck subpixel.
- Open a full-screen solid black image, then cycle through white, red, green, and blue. A true bright pixel stays fixed in the same spot and same brightness no matter what color is behind it — that’s what separates it from a rendering artifact.
If it survives all three checks, you’re dealing with a stuck subpixel — one of the red, green, or blue elements that make up that pixel is stuck in the “on” position instead of switching off. That’s different from a dead pixel, which shows up as a black dot with zero light output. Dead pixels don’t respond to any of the fixes below — a stuck bright pixel usually does, at least partially.
Check Which Screen You Actually Have
This matters more than most guides mention. Every iPad Pro model from 2018 through 2022 uses LCD (Liquid Retina or Liquid Retina XDR with mini-LED backlighting). The 2024 M4 iPad Pro switched to Tandem OLED (Apple calls it Ultra Retina XDR). Every standard iPad and iPad Air is still LCD. This split matters because one of the fixes below is safe on LCD and genuinely risky on OLED.
Method 1: Just Wait It Out
Sounds too simple, but it works often enough to try first. Power the iPad off completely and leave it off for 24 hours. Stuck subpixels are sometimes caused by a temporary electrical hiccup rather than a hardware fault, and a full power cycle plus rest lets the liquid crystal (or in OLED’s case, the sub-pixel driver) settle back to normal. Costs you nothing, so do this before anything else.
Method 2: Run a Pixel-Cycling Tool
This is the safest active fix and works on both LCD and OLED screens, since it doesn’t touch the glass at all — it just rapidly flashes colors over the stuck spot to try to “unstick” it electrically.
- Open Safari on the iPad and go to jscreenfix.com, then tap Launch JScreenFix.
- Drag the flashing square directly over the stuck pixel.
- Let it run for at least 10 minutes. If nothing changes, extend it to 30–60 minutes.
- Alternatively, grab a dedicated app from the App Store — Pixel Control and Display Test Pattern both work well for iPad and combine diagnosis with color-cycling patterns in one place.
If you’re photosensitive or prone to seizures, skip this method — the rapid flashing pattern is a genuine trigger risk, and there’s no way to soften it without breaking the fix.
Method 3: Gentle Pressure — LCD iPads Only
Skip this entirely if you have the 2024 or newer iPad Pro (Tandem OLED). OLED panels are far less tolerant of pressure, and you can turn one stuck pixel into a permanent dark patch or touch-calibration issue. This method is for standard iPads, iPad Airs, and iPad Pro models 2022 and earlier.
- Power off the iPad.
- Wrap a soft, lint-free cloth around something blunt and rounded — a pencil eraser works fine. Nothing sharp, nothing hard.
- Apply light, even pressure directly on the stuck pixel’s location.
- While still applying pressure, power the iPad back on, then release the pressure.
- Check the spot against a solid color. If it’s gone, good. If not, you can try once or twice more — but stop completely if you see any rippling, discoloration, or a spreading patch. That’s a sign you’re causing new damage, not fixing old damage.
Treat this as a last resort, not routine maintenance. One careful attempt is reasonable; repeated hard pressing just trades a tiny dot for a bigger problem.
What to Do If Nothing Works
A pixel that doesn’t respond to rest, color-cycling, or (on LCD) gentle pressure is likely a permanent hardware defect — either a manufacturing flaw or panel damage. At that point it’s a warranty conversation, not a DIY one:
- Apple’s standard one-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects, including certain pixel issues, and AppleCare+ extends that coverage.
- Book a Genius Bar appointment or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider — bring photos of the pixel against black, white, and a couple of solid colors so they can verify it quickly.
- If the iPad is out of warranty, get a repair quote before assuming it’s not worth fixing — a single stuck pixel on an otherwise healthy iPad is usually a cheap, contained repair rather than a full replacement.
