If this was working fine an hour ago and now you’re staring at that message, it’s rarely the monitor dying out of nowhere. Something changed in between, a driver update, a Windows patch, the PC went to sleep and didn’t wake the display properly, or the cable got bumped when you moved something on the desk. Work through these in order. The first two fix it for most people.
Reseat the DisplayPort Cable
Sounds too simple to matter, but DP connectors are notorious for looking fully plugged in when they’re not quite seated. Rule this out first.
- Shut down the PC and turn off the monitor completely.
- Unplug the DP cable from both ends.
- Check the connector for bent pins or dust, then plug it back in until you feel the latch click.
- Power the monitor on first, then the PC.
Confirm the Monitor Is Actually Set to DisplayPort
Some monitors don’t auto-switch inputs, especially if you’ve also got an HDMI cable plugged into the same screen. Press the physical input/source button on the monitor (usually near the power button) and manually select DisplayPort, or DP1/DP2 if there’s more than one.
Roll Back or Reinstall the Graphics Driver
If this started right after a Windows Update or a fresh GPU driver install, the driver is the prime suspect, not the hardware.
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, and choose Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab. If Roll Back Driver is available, use it.
- If it’s grayed out, uninstall the driver (tick “delete the driver software” if prompted), restart, and let Windows reinstall a clean copy, or grab the latest version from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel directly.
Only Happens After Sleep? This One’s Different
DisplayPort doesn’t wake up the same way HDMI does. HDMI keeps sending a signal the monitor can pick up right away; DP depends on a proper handshake between the GPU and the monitor’s hot-plug detect line, and that handshake sometimes fails to restart cleanly when Windows wakes. It’s a well-known quirk of the standard, not something specifically broken in your setup.
- Try switching the monitor off and back on with its own power button after waking the PC, this forces DP to re-handshake.
- Turn off Fast Startup: Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → uncheck “Turn on fast startup.”
- In Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings, find PCI Express → Link State Power Management and set it to Off.
- On Nvidia cards, switch the power management mode to “Prefer maximum performance” in the Nvidia Control Panel instead of “Optimal power”, the power-saving state is often what’s dropping the link.
Swap the Cable and Try a Different Port
DP cables fail more often than people expect, especially cheap or overly long ones. Try a different DisplayPort cable if you have one, and test another DP port on the GPU if there’s more than one.
Using a Dock, Hub, or KVM Switch? Bypass It
Docking stations and multi-monitor hubs are a common point of failure people overlook, because everything else on the dock, USB, charging, ethernet, still works fine. Plug the monitor directly into the GPU or laptop’s DP output. If that fixes it, the dock is the problem, not your PC or monitor.
Desktop PC? Reseat the GPU
If the PC was recently moved, cleaned, or had a side panel off, the GPU can shift slightly in its PCIe slot without fully disconnecting, enough to keep the system running but drop the DisplayPort signal specifically. Power down, unplug the PC, remove the GPU, and reseat it firmly until it clicks into the slot and the retention clip locks.
Check for a Monitor Firmware Update
A handful of monitor brands, Dell in particular, have shipped firmware updates specifically to fix DP handshake and signal-detection bugs. Check the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model number under drivers/downloads. Installing it usually needs a USB cable connected from the monitor to your PC during the update.
If you’ve been through all of the above and the error still shows up on the same cable and port, but a different monitor works fine on that exact cable and port, the DisplayPort output on your GPU, or the monitor’s DP input, is likely failing. Test the cable and monitor separately on another device before deciding anything needs replacing.
